Human thermal comfort models have recently matured to accurately and consistently predict comfort responses in various environmental conditions. Our human thermal comfort analysis tool has been integrated directly within the TAITherm thermal simulation software. This provides a framework for HVAC engineers to design to the comfort specs relevant to humans rather than to temperature specs which are environment dependent. Sounds too good to be true. Well, it gets even better. The design can be validated via precision testing with thermal manikins, which can act as human subject surrogates. By minimizing testing – human subject testing in particular - such an approach will ultimately save your company time, money, and headaches.
How is this accomplished, you ask? The virtual simulation world provides a cost-effective platform that allows the user to perform valuable trade-off studies and design excursions without wasting time or money creating it in the physical world. Using the TAITherm Human Thermal software, the engineering team can fully design the HVAC system and account for realistic human physiological responses (skin/core temperatures, sweat rates, respiration, metabolic heating, and peripheral vasomotion – oh my!). This can be used to evaluate sensation and comfort for the environmental conditions of interest. To bolster confidence in the model predictions during the design phase, testing sufficient to develop a validated model can be accomplished using passive manikins (HVAC Manikin, MTNW) and/or active sweating thermal manikins (Newton, MTNW).
You read that right; I said manikins - not mannequins! These two manikins, developed by Thermetrics, are fully equipped with everything they need, except for the proper attire and post-analysis tool, to deliver the correct information to the user in less time than historically required. Our Human Thermal Comfort Software (aka ManikinPC) mimics and utilizes the thermoregulatory responses in the body to create a realistic virtual world in which engineers can monitor the responses that the complex human body would have in any environment the engineers wish to put them in. If you want to learn more about these Thermal Manikins, please return to our blog in the near future for our upcoming blog post on this subject.
Instead of using humans with often fickle and biased cabin criticism, why not use a Manikin that won’t talk back while giving their feedback? Even better yet, why not pair it with an analysis tool that speaks the same language as the Manikins? The TAITherm Human Thermal Extension developed here at ThermoAnalytics considers the environment, human physiology, and clothing and delivers temperature for determining human thermal sensation and comfort over time.
